Good Morning,

MCPS and Walter Johnson High School are excited to announce that registration for Winter 2025-2026 sports has opened! Below is information regarding the upcoming Winter sports season, as well as the registration process. Additional information can be found on the MCPS Athletics website.

Tryouts begin for most sports on November 15th. All participants should be present at all relevant tryouts.

Registration Information

How to RegisterStudents must be registered by a parent through the MCPS ParentVue Portal. More information regarding the registration process can be found inthis letter from MCPS(also available in Spanish). Students should be registered by November 13th in order to guarantee that the registration will be processed in time for the first day of tryouts.

Steps for Registering via ParentVue (DIRECTIONS AVAILABLE HERE).Here is a video with how to register.

  1. Login to MCPS ParentVue Portal
  2. Locate “Online Registration” in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  3. You should then see prompts to enter information for the “2025-2026 HS Athletics Registration – Winter”.
If you see something for “Annual Verification” or “Resume Annual Registration”, please click the “Start Over” button, logout and log back in, this should then allow you to access the Athletic Registration.
  4. The Athletics Registration screens will have you verify information in the system and then allow you to review and complete the Athletics Registration forms.
If any of the information appearing on the “Family” or “Parent/Guardian” information screens is incorrect, please contact the School Registrar to have this corrected before completing your registration.

ParentVue Troubleshooting Information If a parent is having trouble logging into the MCPS ParentVue Portal:
(MCPS also has a guide to ParentVue for parents here).

  • If you have never activated your parent account:Parents were sent activation information at the beginning of the school year, which included an Activation Key. If you still have this information, use it to activate your parent account. If you do not have the activation information, email Walter Johnson Athletic Director [email protected] or the School Registrar. Be sure to include the student name, ID and parent name in the email. You can also call the Main Office at Walter Johnson at 240-740-6900 during normal office hours.
  • Forgot your password? Click on the Forgot Password link on the ParentVue Portal.
  • Forgot the email address you used to activate your account? Email Walter Johnson Athletic Director [email protected] or the School Registrar ([email protected]).

Pre-Participation PhysicalsStudents should complete their pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) so that the medical eligibility form (last page of SR-8) is ready for online submission or for submission to the coach prior to tryouts/practices. Physicals are valid for 13 months with MCPS. A partial list of Clinics that offer Sports Physicals within the Montgomery County area is available online. Physicals can be uploaded by the parent during the registration process. However, if a parent needs to submit a physical after the student has already been registered, email an electronic copy of the completed pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) to Walter Johnson Athletic Director [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the timeline for the start of sports? Registration will open on October 13th (at 12pm). Tryouts/practices will begin on November 15th for most sports. Depending on the sport, tryouts may last a few days or up to two weeks. The preseason (tryouts and practices) will continue for three weeks, and the first contests are scheduled for December 5th.

If a student participated in optional offseason conditioning or summer workouts with a Walter Johnson coach prior to the start of the season, does the student still need to register for Winter sports? Yes! Registration or participation in optional offseason workouts does not mean the student is registered for the upcoming Winter season. Any student who would like to participate in this upcoming Winter sports season must be registered by a parent using ParentVue as outlined above. If you had previously registered your student for All School Conditioning prior to registering for Winter Sports - you should select "I do not wish to participate in any sports for this season" when prompted to select for Year-Round Athletics.

If a student registered or participated in athletics in a sport for school last year (2024-2025), does the student need to register again this year? Yes! The registration is only for one sports season. Any student who would like to participate in this upcoming Winter sports season must register using ParentVue as outlined above.

When should a parent register a student? Registration opens on October 13th. It is highly recommended that students register at least 24 hours prior to the first day of tryouts/practices in order for the registration to be processed.

How do we know if our registration was submitted and received by the school? The parent email associated with the registration will receive a confirmation email upon submitting the registration through ParentVue. If the parent does not receive a confirmation email, the registration was not submitted. Log back into ParentVue. If you see "complete" - edit the registration, save and continue and click "submit."

Can we register even if we do not have our physical form completed yet? Yes - parents may register students prior to having an up to date physical completed. However, once the registration is submitted, the parent may not access the registration to upload the physical form. The physical form will then need to be submitted directly to Larry Hurd Jr., Athletic Director. It can be sent electronically via email (even a picture of the completed physical will be accepted).

My student can't get an appointment to get a physical until after the start of tryouts. Is that ok? Unfortunately, we cannot allow a student to tryout or participate in athletics until an up to date pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) has been submitted to the school. If getting an appointment with your physician is a challenge, there are other options - a partial list of Clinics that offer Sports Physicals within the Montgomery County area is available online.

My student participated in athletics in middle school. Does Walter Johnson High School have the physical that was submitted to the middle school? Physicals submitted to middle schools for athletics will be on file with the high school. However, please note that in middle school, physicals were valid for two years. In high school, physicals are only valid for 13 months. If the physical was dated more than 13 months before the start of the upcoming season, it will not be valid.

Is there a schedule of tryouts, practices or games posted yet? The practice schedule will likely be Mondays through Fridays with some Saturday practices (depending on the sport). Coaches will post tryout and practice schedules on the

Will there be tryouts, or are all students who register going to be on a roster? This will depend on the sport and the number of student registrations. Tryout/practice information will be posted and communicated to students and parents, including whether there will be a tryout period to start the season. Similarly, information about where to report for tryouts and what the student needs to bring to tryouts will be communicated to parents and students at that time.

Can a student tryout for more than one sport in the same season? Parents must declare only one sport per season during the registration process. However, if a student would like to change his/her sport prior to the start of tryouts, the parent must email WJ Athletic Director [email protected] in advance of tryouts. Similarly, if a student tries out for a sport and does not make the team (or decides to change sports after the tryout date), please have the parent email WJ Athletic Director [email protected].

What if a student wants to serve as a manager and not an athlete? Managers can serve a valuable purpose for athletic teams and can earn up to 30 SSL hours per season. If a student would like to participate as a manager, the student must be registered for the sport by the parent (same registration process as for athletes, through ParentVue). However, student managers are not required to have an up to date physical.

Will transportation be provided for tryouts and practices? Unfortunately, transportation is not provided to and from tryouts and practices. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation for tryouts and practices. Additionally, students may not remain on campus for extended periods of time before or after tryouts and practices due to supervision policies.
